‘THE WOODS’

...the first single off the forthcoming LP, ‘Above The Wreckage’.


‘The Woods’ has been around for a long time, longer than most of my songs. I wrote this one back in 2015 after my then girlfriend and I took a road trip to a camp site in Hendersonville, NC called The Woodds. The place was cool, despite spelling their name wrong. It was a great trip, but sadly the spot was short lived and only stayed open for about a year. This is why I never wrote love songs.

In this case though, it worked out. That girlfriend has been my wife for four years and is now the mother of my 17 month old son, Levi Sting Ray. ‘The Woods’ represents such an energetic, youthful & rejuvenated time in my life. I think the reason this song has stuck around so long & been played so many different ways over the years is because of its simple narrative. When life is good, it’s okay to accept it. Turn the radio up, roll the windows down and hit the road baby. I’m not saying anything new here, I’m just singing my version of what it felt like to be free & in love. There, I said it. I wrote a love song, the only one I’ll ever need to write.

The Howdy Men features the songs of Jeremy Ray, playing Guitar & Singing, alongside Derron Nuhfer (Reconciler, Less Than Jake) on Saxophone, and 4/5th of the band Pony League. (Gus Fernandez on Keys & Vocals, Jay Howell on Drums & Vocals, Mason Turner on Bass, & Charlie Mills on Electric Guitar).

With the help of Damon Moon, the Howdy Men entered Standard Electric Audio in the fall of 2019 and made their debut record. Cut to the spring of 2022, and we’re finally releasing the first single / opening track off the forthcoming LP, ‘Above The Wreckage’. The pandemic and fatherhood might have slowed us down, but its happening now and we couldn’t be more excited.
