Howdy friends…your ole pal jRay here.
So here’s the story and I’m gonna tell ya…
One of my favorite Atlanta bands is called Pony League and one of their best songs is called ‘Carolina Highway’. About five years ago, Pony League & I came together for the first time and played The 529 in East Atlanta Village. For the next few years we sporadically played local shows under the moniker Jeremy Ray & The Carolina Highway. Having Pony League back me up and play my songs felt like a dream. A dream where after being in bands for over 20 years I was finally hearing my songs for the first time. In November of ’18, we even played a couple of songs I wrote for Amanda at our wedding (The Woods & Waking Up Better).
My dad even got up and played a couple 60’s tunes with us, it was so rad. I’ll never forget it.
Cut to about a year later and we’re at Standard Electric Audio with Damon Moon making our first record. We started recording in May of 2019 and by the end of the year, we had ourselves a record. Near the end of tracking, I asked my friend Derron Nuhfer if he would add saxophone to a couple songs. I sent him the whole record and told him to do whatever he wanted, so he sent back amazing parts on every song. Thus, joining the band and even mastering the record.
In October of ’19, we played our first gig as a six piece band and unknowingly our last one as The Carolina Highway. 2020 hits and we’re getting ready to send this record off to the pressing plant, but the world changed & that never happened. The week before the coronavirus hit the states, I get the best news of my life. I’m gonna be a dad!
I could’ve easily released this record during the pandemic, but that would’ve been wrong. It needed to come out when all of us could be together. Fast forward to November of 2021 and the record is still in the queue, just fallen down a few rungs. I’m focused on my family and my career as a visual artist when I get asked to play the Chomp & Stomp Festival in Cabbagetown. It’s my favorite Atlanta fest and I’m so stoked! I send this text to the band… “Howdy Men, y’all feel like playing a gig?!”
25 months since our last time playing together and we’re back. Our first gig as Jeremy Ray & The Howdy Men and it ruled!
So we kept jamming, started putting together some new songs, played some really cool shows and realized it was time to get this record out.
What better excuse than turning 40 do you need to finally get some shit off your chest?
October 21st, 2022. ‘Above The Wreckage’ album release party at The Earl in East Atlanta! It feels so good & weird to even type that out, but I am ready & honored to celebrate this music & this artwork. So many beautiful people contributed to this record, it’s theirs as much as it is mine.
‘Above The Wreckage’ was made in Atlanta, Georgia by:
The Carolina Highway, The Howdy Men:
Gus Fernandez: piano, keys, organ, celesta, vocals.
‘Fireball’ Jay Howell: drums, vocals.
Charlie Mills: lead guitar.
Derron Nuhfer: saxophone, engineering, mastering.
Jeremy Ray: songwriting, singing, acoustic & electric guitars, synth, samples, bass on ‘Devil Girl in Milwaukee’.
Mason Turner: bass.
With a little help from our good friends:
Damon Moon: engineered and mixed this whole record, he also played the telecaster on a couple parts, did a little singing and made some wicked cool sounds using some wicked cool gear in his studio, Standard Electric Audio. Steve Seachrist & Katie Butler helped us big time with pre-production at Radon Recordings, They also played pedal steel guitar & sang on ‘Devil Girl in Milwaukee’ & ‘Optimus Blues’. This edition of 40 hand-made, lathe cut records and 50 cassettes were pressed by the hand of Tyler Bisson at his studio Audio Geography in Providenc, RI.
