Shutter – One Last Verse to Kill

I was raised in the upstate of South Carolina and I started going to punk shows in late ’96, early ’97. Shows in neighborhood clubhouses, school cafeterias, church youth group houses, dive bars in Spartanburg, skate jams outside of skate shops in downtown Greenville. A very pivotal time in this young man’s life. Around mid ’98 when we were juniors in high school, a band formed and they were called Special Reason. Scott, Jason, Kyle, Patrick and then me, just hanging around. I didn’t know how to play an instrument yet but I would often get on stage at their gigs and sing ‘Roots Radicals’ or maybe an Operation Ivy or Mxpx song.

In the summer of 1999, I met Ben & Patch at a Special Reason gig. It was at one of those all-night church lock-in things at the ice skating rink. Which fucking deacon had the bright idea to lock a bunch of horny youth groupers all in one place at night? I’ll tell ya what was going on at those lock-ins and it wasn’t what jesus would do. Anyway, I think we formed Shutter the following day. Ben & Patch went to a different high school than me & all the Special Reason dudes, so our little punk club was expanding. Ben & Patch had been playing together for a while in Ben’s parents living room and they needed a bass player/singer. So that’s where I came in and I’m still doing the same shit 23 years later.

Our first gig was at The Youth House in Fountain Inn, SC on September 3rd, 1999 with our pals Special Reason. This was a short lived, dilapidated house that sat in the lot next to the baptist church & the police department. Despite its corrupt surroundings, I have nothing but fond memories of that paint splattered clubhouse.

By the end of ’99, our new friend Josh (from a band called The Enemies) joined our little gang and the four of us stayed together as Shutter for two more years. We never left the Carolina’s but we had some incredible times together. Everyone remembers their first band. We played at churchy venues like The Powerhouse, Slacker 77 & Carpenters Cellar. We played house shows in basements, living rooms & backyards. We played skate parks, vet halls, a Clemson University amphitheater, The Piazza Bergamo and dive bars like Ground Zero & The Crazy Q. We felt like kings of the road. Our own little straight & narrow road.

Like most upstate bands at the time, Shutter recorded at Crystal Rains studio with a guy named Doug Mullinax. RIP Doug, you were the absolute coolest dude and you didn’t give one single shit about all these dumb punk kids coming into your basement to record their stupid little songs. Good on ya. We made three recordings with Doug. In 2000, our first release was an 8-song EP called ‘The Reason For it All’. Then we did a 3 song CD in the Spring of ‘01 called ‘Murder on the Rocks’ (this was our best effort). Shortly after this the band fizzled for a while, but we reconvened in December to record all the material we had left. The result was ‘One Last Verse to Kill’, our only full length record. Recorded Dec 17th & 18th and mixed on Dec. 20th. Just in time to come out at our 50th & final show, on Dec. 31st, 2001. I hand pressed 50 copies of the CD and they all sold at the show.

Until now, this music hasn’t been heard by anyone other than those 50 kids who bought the CD at our last show. Most of the lyrics and singing is god awful & cringey, but the music and the recordings aren’t bad. There’s even a few moments on this record that hold up against any music I’ve ever been a part of. None of that really matters though, it’s all about looking back at those youthful days and having a laugh. I’ll be 40 this year and it’s been over 20 years since Shutter has played together. Maybe someday we’ll call up the guys in Special Reason, The Enemies, TredThreat, Mindphaser, the Kool Aid Clan, the Defining Moment, Dorkis, The Wannabees and The Phobics. See if anybody out there is on a mission from god.
